You can set the LAlarm to erase any files and folders when stolen. In addition to monitoring, LAlarm also alert the user through a variety of ways. The audible alarm is useful, however you are not always nearby to your notebook, so you can configure the program to automatically send an e-mail to your given e-mail ID. The application also provides options for notifications via SMS; however this option works only with American carriers. LAlarm also allows you to define a secure zone around your computer using different IP addresses.

The LAlarm has a differentiator for other applications of the genre, because it serves to monitor battery longevity, disk utilization and even idle system. The configuration is done manually and you are alerted constantly in cases of low battery, little use of the resources of the laptop and excessive use of disk. Finally, if we cannot avoid laptop theft, at least our most important data is safe with LAlarm.

A leading netbook freeware blog praised LAlarm as "a very effective deterrent against netbook theft"

NetbookFreeware, a leading netbook freeware blog, praised LAlarm as "a very effective deterrent against netbook theft". NetbookFreeware further says:
LAlarm: Prevent your Netbook from Getting Stolen
LAlarm is a free software that helps in preventing your netbook from getting stolen. When a thief tries to steal your netbook, LAlarm sounds a loud alarm in the same manner as car alarm. This can deter the thief from stealing your netbook.
Erase Netbook Data if it is Stolen:
In case a thief manages to steal your netbook, one thing you might be most worried about is your sensitive data. LAlarm takes care of this too. In case your netbook is stolen, and the thief tries to login to netbook with wrong credentials, LAlarm will securely erase your pre-defined files and folders. Once the data deletion process is complete, LAlarm can even send you an email (only if netbook is connected to internet).
Apart from this, LAlarm can also send you an email and SMS when it detects that netbook is stolen. This works only if netbook is connected to internet.
Final Thoughts:
I find LAlarm a very effective deterrent against netbook theft. However, it is definitely not fool-proof. For example, thief might simply shutdown your netbook before stealing it, and no alarm will sound in that case. However, I would still use this software on my netbook, as it will help at least in majority of situations, if not all. It is also helpful to encrypt data disk.

Let Your Stolen Laptop Scream To Help You Find It
There are different ways to secure your laptop against theft, but in this article, we’ll show you a free way to improve your laptop security. LAlarm is a free laptop security alarming software. It has several different alarms to help protect your laptop, the most important of them being the Theft Alarm. …when someone attempts to steal your laptop, either the power cord or the USB flash drive will get disconnected from the laptop. This triggers the Theft Alarm, and the thief will get a nasty shock because the laptop will emit a loud siren like a car alarm….

You can use IP addresses to define “Safe Zones” in which your laptop is considered safe. If anyone tries to use it outside the pre-defined safe zones, it triggers the Perimeter Alarm...

LAlarm runs as a background process when you start your laptop. In my tests, it took up an insignificant 7.5MB of memory, so you probably won’t even notice that it is running.

LAlarm: protect our personal information from theft of the laptop
The use of computers in every case leads to the storage of our personal data, important documents, passwords, personal accounts, and any other information.
These of course we want to keep confidential, and then down programs that allow you to protect files with passwords, programs that hide files so that they are invisible, and programs that directly encrypt everything we want, so that data from a folder completely unreadable.

All this therefore gives us a better protection against intruders who want to fix your nose to read our information . But everything goes to hell in one case, if in fact, happen in the unlikely event that our laptop is stolen in one way or another, these data could be extrapolated, and therefore not only we lost our beloved laptop but all data containing confidential information including account passwords, credit card numbers and so the situation much worse.

The program that we present, using audible alarms, we will not only protect your computer from theft, but also to destroy any folders on your system in case of theft or to launch programs or processes in the same case in this so even if we lose the computer at least we saved the data.

Once downloaded and launched three options present themselves, so we press on "install" to install ' application , once completed you will be prompted to restart your computer, then let's do it.

Each time the computer restarts the program will start, but is virtually invisible to access configuration we click on the link located in the start menu.
The options allow us to set the settings made, but already the default program alarms ability to disconnect the computer from the cable feed , and alarms that are triggered when the available energy reaches 30% disk has ol'hard some mistakes, put the computer to protect just plug into the mains, and then press the configuration win + L "the computer will pause, if by chance then we remove the cable (for example, someone who wants to steal it) the computer will emit a alarm.
Advanced options allow us to select the folder, then the program will detect a theft will delete all data in these folders.

LAlarm praised as "an intelligent software" by Baixak

Baixak, a leading software download and review web site in Brazil, praised LAlarm as " an intelligent software". Also Baixak recommends LAlarm "LAlarm is recommended for any user who values the safety of your laptop and want to have more peace of mind when leaving home."
Your laptop is safe with this software that protects files and sounds an alarm in case of theft.

So, nothing better than having an alarm for that theft will not happen and if someone takes your computer anyway, a system that erases the most important content of your system …. The LAlarm is an intelligent software that acts as the settings established by the user. If you store important documents of your company, you can configure LAlarm to delete any folders when stolen.

For those who have paranoia about the security of documents and notebook LAlarm might find in an efficient way of monitoring. In addition to free software is proving very light and is highlighted by having many settings. Of course there are some imperfections in the program, since there is no translation into Portuguese and lack guidance for application protection (one master password).
In our tests we saw that the software actually monitors the activities of PC and should be a great ally in the daily. It is worth noting that sending messages to an email address can only be accomplished by using a Gmail account. LAlarm is recommended for any user who values the safety of your laptop and want to have more peace of mind when leaving home.

Snapfiles praised LAlarm as a clever anti-theft alarm software

Snapfiles, one of popular software review web sites, has reviewed LAlarm and rated LAlarm 5 stars out of 5. Here is what Snapfiles says about LAlarm:
LAlarm is a clever anti-theft alarm software for your laptop that provides different security features to prevent your laptop from being stolen, as well as data recovery and destruction options to protect your sensitive data. The program can sound an audible alarm if someone is trying to steal your laptop, and also lock down your system if someone is trying to hack your password. Once the system has been locked down due to password tempering, the program can try to upload data from selected folders to your Gmail account and/or securely delete the content of selected folders or drives. LAlarm assumes that someone is trying to steal your computer if the power cord is unplugged or if a USB drive is removed while the system is armed. You can lock down your laptop with any USB drive by fastening a strap to the USB stick and then securing it to a table, chair, luggage or other object - if someone wants to steal your laptop, he will need to unplug the USB drive, which will activate the alarm. Other features include battery alerts, perimeter alarms (based on IP address range), email and SMS notifications, command-line executions, and more….

Traditional computer security measures often are not enough to protect your laptop and netbook.

Laptop security risks include insecure public wireless networks, laptop theft, laptop search, about which you don't worry with your desktop computer. Whether your laptop is stolen, your privacy can still be at risk by simply traveling with your laptop.

However, good laptop security does not have to cost money. The following are seven easy-to-use, useful and free applications that can help protect your laptop, your sensitive data and your privacy.

Encryption. TrueCrypt (www.truecrypt.org) program can protect your data against unauthorized access.

Backup. Cobian Backup (www.cobiansoft.com) is a reliable backup software that can protect your data against loss. An alternative is Mozy (www.mozy.com) free edition — an online backup software with 2 gigs of space.

Antivirus. AVG free edition provides protection against viruses, spyware and other malware. (http://free.avg.com/ww-en/download-free).

Firewall. The built-in Windows firewall protects your laptop against hackers while you're online. (but make sure you configured it properly)

LAlarm "a very cool tool" praised by Ken Harthun

Ken Harthun, a former research scientist currently writing a book "14 Golden Rules of Computer Security", reviewed LAlarm and published in a Techtarget web site. Here is some excerpt.
Picture this: Someone tries to steal your laptop off your desk and as soon as they pull the plug from the wall, your laptop emits a screaming siren that won’t quit until your password is entered to unlock the laptop and disable the alarm.

There’s another scenario: You take one of your old USB thumb drives (maybe the one you used to make an anti virus bootable scanner) attach a chain to it and secure it to your desk; if someone tries to move your laptop, unplugging the USB thumb drive in the process, the alarm goes off.

This is possible because of an interesting piece of software called “LAlarm.” It’s free for personal use and there’s a nominal fee for commercial use. …

I tested this software by installing it on my Dell laptop. It works. You simply install the software, configure the options you want and restart your laptop. To set the alarm, you just press Windows key + L to lock the workstation. If anyone pulls the plug or removes the thumb drive, the alarm sounds.

There’s much more to the software than just an alarm. …

The Kim Komando Show reviewed LAlarm

The Kim Komando Show reviewed LAlarm and here is what they say:
I’m sure you love your laptop. It connects you to your digital life wherever you are. What’s better than sitting in a coffee shop and getting work done? Nothing, I say. But do you know who else loves your computer? Thieves.

To a thief, your laptop is a shiny, portable payday. You might get up for your tenth cup of coffee. And when you turn around, your laptop is gone. It can happen that fast. Shouldn’t there be some kind of warning system?

LAlarm is like a car alarm for your laptop. It’s pretty easy to use. When you get up for that coffee, lock your computer. Just press Windows Key + L. If your power adapter is unplugged, an alarm sounds at full volume. It can’t be turned off without logging back in.

Computer Security Software Review blog praised LAlarm for improving laptop security and protect against theft

Computer Security Software Review blog praised LAlarm for improving laptop security and protect against theft and also praised small program size of LAlarm. Here is what Computer Security Software Review says:
LAlarm Laptop Makes Your Laptop Scream When Stolen
...
The download is less than 1MB, and the setup program looks the same as the main program that you launch after installation. LAlarm runs as a background process when you start your laptop. In my tests, it took up an insignificant 7.5MB of memory, so you probably won’t even notice that it is running.

Improve Laptop Security and Protect Against Theft. Securing your laptop is simple and can be done in two ways: 1. If your laptop is connected to a power outlet, simply lock it with the Win+L key shortcut. 2. If there is no power outlet available: a) Use a neck-strap or USB extension cord with any old flash drive and insert it into a USB port. b) Tie the neck-strap or cord to a firm table. c) Lock the laptop with the Win+L shortcut. That’s it. Now, when someone attempts to steal your laptop, either the power cord or the USB flash drive will get disconnected from the laptop.
...
This triggers the Theft Alarm, and the thief will get a nasty shock because the laptop will emit a loud siren like a car alarm. In my testing, I was worried about neighbors rushing to see what was happening! The alarm stops only when you unlock the laptop by entering your login credentials.

Account lockout

Account lockout is a feature of Microsoft Windows security that locks a user account if a number of failed login attempts occur within a specified amount of time. It is not the feature of LAlarm. However LAlarm depends on Account Lockout, the security feature of Windows, for triggering a certain actions such as data recovery, data destruction, theft responses. So if you want to use data recovery, data destruction and theft response, you should able account lockout and its audit policy (detail is described in the manual).

If you want to enable account lockout on your computer, you should know the potential problems. You could lockout your computer by a mistake and unable to access your computer for some period of time. Yet worse, data recovery, data destruction and theft response actions will occur if you configured LAlarm in such way.

Here are account lockout resources:

Windows XP logon password is a must

Benefits of folder encryption

Folder encryption encrypt folder level while full disk encryption encrypt the entire drive or disk. Full disk encryption is not effect against hackers or viruses because they penetrated your computer, full disk encryption already decrypted your drive. The security door is widely openly. However folder encryption can provide protection that full disk encryption can not provide. Folder encryption can still protect data even though a hacker and a virus try to steal your data. However folder encryption could be powerless if the data that a hacker or a virus trying to steal was already decrypted at the time of theft attempt.
